About This Product

The Joseph Gillott 1950 drawing nib is a fine point artist’s dip pen nib with a fairly stiff feel, making it a reliable choice for modern calligraphy, Copperplate and detailed pointed pen work.

A fine point drawing nib for controlled lettering and detail work

The Joseph Gillott 1950 drawing nib is a distinctive fine point dip pen nib designed for artists, calligraphers and illustrators who want control, precision and a firmer writing feel. Its uniquely shaped form, with a small sharp point and expanded end, makes it especially useful for detailed line work as well as elegant pointed pen lettering.

Suitable for modern and Copperplate calligraphy

This nib is very well suited to modern calligraphy and Copperplate, particularly for calligraphers who prefer a nib with a slightly stiffer feel. That added firmness can help with control, making it easier to manage fine strokes, delicate letterforms and careful details while still achieving attractive line variation.

Fairly stiff feel for responsive control

Unlike very soft flexible nibs, the Joseph Gillott 1950 offers a firmer, more controlled writing experience. This makes it a practical option for those who want a nib that responds cleanly to pressure without feeling overly soft, and it can be particularly helpful for precise pointed pen work and disciplined script practice.

Distinctive artist’s dip pen design

This is an artist’s dip pen nib with a uniquely shaped profile. The small, sharp point supports fine detail and crisp lines, while the expanded end contributes to its character and handling. It is a useful nib for both lettering and drawing, making it a versatile addition to a creative toolkit.

Compatibility

The Joseph Gillott 1950 drawing nib can be used with a Speedball oblique penholder or the William Mitchell drawing penholder, giving you flexibility depending on your preferred setup. This compatibility makes it a convenient choice for calligraphers and artists who already use these popular holders.

The William Mitchell heritage in making pen nibs began whilst working with his brother John Mitchell in the early 1820s. William Mitchell established his own business in 1825 to become one of the leading nib manufacturers and famous for lettering pens. Almost 100 years later William Mitchell merged with Hinks, Wells & Co another pen manufacturer to form British Pens employing around 1000 people in the Bearwood Road area of Birmingham.

During the early 1960s British Pens acquired the pen business of other pen manufacturers Perry & Co and John Mitchell once again reuniting the two brothers. Joseph Gillott who were famous for their artist drawing and mapping nibs amalgamated with British pens in 1969.
